What is Family Constellations?
Family Constellations is a therapeutic approach designed to reveal deeply rooted family dynamics and systemic issues. This method, developed by Bert Hellinger, draws from various psychological and therapeutic traditions, including psychodynamic therapy, existential phenomenology, and elements of indigenous spiritual practices born out of his time spent in Africa. The core principle of Family Constellations is the recognition that individuals are part of a larger family system. That is, an individual's emotional and psychological issues often did not start with them, but can be traced back to unresolved traumas, entanglements, and dis-order within their family system.
Transformative Experiences
The impact of Family Constellations can be profound. Often, patterns within the family emerge that were previously unknown or unconsidered. Clients frequently experience the sensation of "connecting the dots" about their family which places their current struggles into a systemic context. By bringing these hidden dynamics to light and acknowledging them, clients experience significant breakthroughs and a sense of liberation.
Session Preparation and Structure
Clients should come to sessions as open as possible. I recommend not having big plans afterward, allowing time to rest and integrate the experience. This work is felt in the body more than in the mind and therefore we must go slowly.Â
